ATLAS Collaboration Awarded 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics

The Breakthrough Prize Foundation has awarded the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics to the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN. Widely regarded as the most valuable prize in science, the Breakthrough Prize recognises transformative contributions to fundamental research.

The ATLAS Collaboration, comprising more than 5,900 physicists from 181 institutions across 42 countries, was recognised for decades of discoveries at the Large Hadron Collider, including the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson, precision measurements of the Standard Model, and searches for physics beyond it.

We are profoundly proud to announce that NIPS-CERN's Dr. Luciano Manhães de Andrade Filho, coordinator of our laboratory and a long-standing ATLAS member, is among the collaboration members sharing this honour. His contributions span calorimeter instrumentation, the TileCal data readout system, and the development of event display tools, including the CaloGeoView and CGV-WEB software that allow physicists worldwide to visualise ATLAS collision data.

This recognition affirms the global impact of the collaborative effort to which NIPS-CERN has contributed for over a decade through its partnerships with CERN, FAPEMIG, CNPq, CAPES, and UFJF.

The Breakthrough Prize ceremony takes place in November 2025 at the NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley.
