On 22 September 2026 Mateus Hufnagel Maranha de Faria defended his doctoral thesis, Development of a simulator and study of crosstalk mitigation for electromagnetic calorimeters, at the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering of UFJF, and was approved.
The work addresses a concrete problem in calorimeter readout: crosstalk, the interference between neighbouring channels that distorts the energy assigned to each cell. The thesis builds a simulator of the readout chain that reproduces the effect, and uses it to study how to mitigate it.
The committee was chaired by the supervisor, Luciano Manhães de Andrade Filho (UFJF), and brought together the co-supervisor Edmar Egídio Purcino de Souza (UFBA), Alexandre Bessa dos Santos and Leandro Rodrigues Manso Silva (UFJF), Bárbara Maria Oliveira Santos (UERJ) and Bertrand Laforge, of LPNHE, the Sorbonne Université and CNRS laboratory in Paris. The presentation was given in English, and the examination ran in both languages.
It is the presence of LPNHE on the committee that makes this defense a milestone. The laboratory is the French partner of INFINITE, the CAPES-COFECUB project coordinated in Brazil by Luciano, which brings together UFJF, UERJ, UFBA and UFRJ on this side and CNRS on the other. Crosstalk is one of the axes of that cooperation, and Prof. Laforge is a co-author, with the group, of the article that takes the results of the thesis to review in an international journal.
LPNHE was in the room as well as on the committee: Frédéric Dejean, a researcher from the laboratory who is spending this month in Juiz de Fora on an INFINITE mission, attended the defense.
Nor does the line end with it. Crosstalk passes to Prof. Tiago Motta Quirino (UERJ), who in November also goes to LPNHE, for six months, on a project fellowship.
The group congratulates Mateus, who began the doctorate in 2020, and thanks him for what he leaves behind.
