Detecção de Raios Cósmicos por Calorímetros Finamente Segmentados Usando a Transformada de Hough
Abstract
In High Energy Physics experiments, calorimeters are responsible for absorbing and measuring the energy of particles as they traverse the detector material. Modern calorimeters feature a large number of readout channels, and their highly segmented design also enables track detection. This work presents a cosmic ray detection algorithm for a hadronic calorimeter (TileCal) based on the Hough Transform. The algorithm uses track information derived from activated calorimeter cells when particles such as muons cross the detector. Details of the proposed method and experimental results are presented. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of TileCal for cosmic ray detection, the proposed approach demonstrates significantly higher efficiency compared to traditional line-fitting algorithms, such as least-squares methods.
