NIPS-CERN Pulse Simulator Reaches the ICHEP 2026 Proceedings on Behalf of ATLAS

At ICHEP 2026, the 43rd International Conference on High Energy Physics, held in Natal from 30 July to 5 August, Thiago C. A. Paschoalin, professor at CEFET-MG and postdoctoral researcher at NIPS-CERN (UFJF), presented on behalf of the ATLAS Collaboration the real-time pulse simulator for the Tile Calorimeter developed by the group. He was one of seven speakers from Brazilian institutions to present ATLAS results at the conference (see the news).

The written version of the talk has now completed its path. The proceedings Real-Time FPGA-Based Pulse Simulator for the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter Readout Chain at the HL-LHC was approved by ATLAS as ATL-TILECAL-PROC-2026-022 and, on 4 November, submitted to the conference proceedings, published in Proceedings of Science (PoS).

In a collaboration of thousands of members, a text signed on behalf of ATLAS speaks for all of them. Before it leaves, it is read and approved by the collaboration itself. Having a work of the group go through that process and reach the proceedings of the main conference of the field, under the name of the whole experiment, is a recognition of the work done at NIPS-CERN.

The simulator generates, at every LHC bunch crossing (40.08 MHz), the energy deposited in a TileCal cell according to its statistical distribution, adds realistic electronic noise, reproduces the FENICS front-end shaper with an IIR filter and emulates the 12-bit ADC of the Phase-II electronics. On a Kintex UltraScale FPGA it uses about 1% of the logic and closes timing with about 3% of margin over the bunch-crossing frequency. It serves to validate and stress-test the energy reconstruction firmware of the HL-LHC upgrade under realistic and repeatable conditions.
